the climb

A jagged peak, it stabs the sky,
a dagger's thrust aimed far too high
Here on the ground, I feel it pierce,
For it is much too vast to climb

The rocky trail is much too steep,
my foothold slips, my lungs grow weak
The mountain sings a failure's song
and mocks my clumsy feet

A gust of wind throws off my stance
I'm hanging here, as down I glance
So close to death, too far I've come
to leave this timely climb to chance

As gales of wind tug at my hair,
I feel His presence meet me there,
and though I cling to crumbling dirt
I offer up a simple prayer

My wayward step will tend to waver,
on treacherous paths of roots and danger,
I won't survive to see the peak
unless I'm climbing with my Savior.
